Computer Wizardry Registration Information

What is a Registered Edition?

The Shareware (unregistered) copies of Computer Wizardry software are licensed to be used for 60 days for the purpose of evaluation. The Registered Edition of a software package is the same as the evaluation copy except that your license to use the software is extended indefinitely and the on-screen reminders to register no longer appear.

How does the registration key work?

Computer Wizardry software operates through the use of a registration "key." This key is an encrypted code which tells the software the registered owner's name and causes it to run as a registered package. This allows you to update your software regularly and, because the registration key is retained in a file on your computer, each update you download will "know" that you are a registered user.

Other companies charge big bucks for updates. Why are CW software updates free?

It has always seemed unfair to me when a company charges $100 to $500 for a software package and then charges $50 to $100 for updates. The last time I paid for an update I was sorely disappointed because the update had so many problems. Besides the fact that my money was poorly spent, I also regretted the fact that I wanted to use the new features but probably wouldn't see another update for a year or more. On top of that, when a new update was released, it would cost me more money to get it.

I don't want people having bad feelings about CW software, so I came up with a plan for providing free or low-cost updates and on-going support via bulletin board systems (BBSs) and the Internet. Using your modem you can grab the latest version of CW software 24-hours per day. Unlike other publishers, once you register your CW Shareware it remains registered; when you download a new version you don't just end up with an evaluation copy; rather, you have the complete Registered Edition.

This helps both of us. It means that you don't have to be concerned that I will nickle-and-dime you to death, and it relieves me of a ton of work involved in providing updates - writing updates notices, printing them all, printing envelopes, stuffing envelopes, mailing, then processing orders which come in... it's a lot of work! I appreciate the $4 I make on update disks, but if a significant number of people are able to get their own updates via modem then that means I can focus on programming and providing better service to more people.

When you become a registered user of CW software, you are placed in my mailing list. If you have an Internet address, you will receive notices of programme releases about every month. Otherwise, I mail out update announcements once or twice per year.

How to update your software

Here are the ways you can keep your Registered Edition Computer Wizardry software up to date:
  • Download updates from this web site.
  • Order updates through the mail.
